Discover the Way to Great Gum Health
First of all, we measure the gums, right? And when they come in, we establish a baseline measurement of their gums to see where they stand. Someone could have healthy gums, or maybe they could have borderline gum disease like collagen gingivitis, or they could have moderate or severe gum disease. Based on our findings, we go over the treatment with them, and someone could need just a standard every-six-months cleaning, like someone who has healthy gums. If they have gingivitis, it may be coming in more often than six months, maybe every four months. And we work with them and show them how to brush, floss properly so that they can take care of their gums at home as well.
If someone has gum disease, we would recommend doing what’s called deep cleaning. And deep cleaning is where you clean under the gums, and there’s usually anesthesia, local anesthesia, that is given to make it more comfortable for the patient. And then we have them back about six weeks after that to do a follow-up and see how they’re doing, see how it’s healing. And if it’s not healing, we might recommend applying antibiotics in the gums. It’s called Arestin. Or if the condition is not improving and depending on the severity of the gum disease, we may recommend seeing a specialist for additional treatment.
